The author of the book Feeding Women of the Talmud, Feeding Ourselves, Kenden Alfond, inspired the creation of a unique program in Belgrade — a women's Talmudic and culinary circle called Creating HERStory. The project connects learning about women from the Talmud, culinary arts, and the development of a women's community. The idea emerged when Kenden's friend Faustin Sigal tagged Kenden in a LinkedIn post about the group, which led to contact with Isidora Jurjević and Sara Barać, the main initiators of the project.
The first step of the project was HERShabbat, a women's retreat for 20 participants from the region, focusing on themes of female identity, health, and the Talmud, including yoga and dance.
Creating HERStory continues this tradition, combining Talmudic learning with cooking, providing a safe space for exploring female identity and strengthening community among young women. The project is funded through the Nevetim program of the Jewish Agency for Israel and is already showing a positive impact on connecting participants and strengthening their Jewish identity.
As part of the program, participants also share their favorite recipes, one of which, Sweet & Savory Purple Onion Casserole, was created by Isidora for one of their events. The recipe combines Balkan and Jewish flavors and perfectly reflects the project's philosophy: learning through community and creativity.
